For the Keeper of the 1968 Registry

Post by Phil Dally »

TII06RU crankcase with VIN 18W106798.

On Santa Cruz, CA Craigslist...not mine.

What does that 1 before the 8W mean?

The 1 before the 8 = "Chevrolet"

The 1 meaning Chevrolet would be the first digit.

Where that 1 is located seems to be the sixth digit.

The 1 is the first digit. They just left out the ones between the 1 and the 8.

Are all 68-69 crankcase stampings like this?

Does anybody have pictures of either to post?

Yes, they are stamped like this. The notch in the top shroud, so that you can see these stampings became wider when the partial vin was added. Since it is a partial vin it doesn't indicate the body type or the trim level. It is the same as the one by the front suspension.
